Roma defender Matteo Ferrari will have to undergo surgery after sufering an injury to his left knee.

The centre-half is likely to be out for up to three weeks and will definitely miss the second leg of the Italian club’s Champions League quarter-final with Manchester United on Wednesday.

Christian Panucci deputised in the centre of the defence for the 2-0 first leg defeat at the Stadio Olimpico last Tuesday, but coach Luciano Spalletti is keen to return the former Italian international to right-back.

Club captain Francesco Totti is another doubt for the European encounter after sitting out Roma’s last two matches with a muscle tear in his left thigh.
